1. Lord of the Rings

Some of the greatest fiction and fantasy ever written. It's inspired more fantasy writing than any other book written in the genre. Somehow Tolkien makes reading excruciatingly detailed descriptions of trees and mountains a less than terrible experience.
2. A Scanner Darkly

An honest look into the world of drug abuse, addiction, and what it means to be a person as an individual and cog in the system, all set in a now long past, distant future.
3. Dune

Science Fiction at it's finest. The world building is some of the best in any literature. Despite the enormity of the story, it's characters, worlds, and ideas, you can't put it down.
4. Fahrenheit 451

A classic for a reason. A scary look into into a future where television and entertainment consumption have slowly driven the love of literature and reading from society. How realistic could that be...?
5. Catch-22

An amazing read about the futility of conflict and the absurdity of the many systems we live with every day.
